Az adományokat elsősorban a több ezer kutya és macska ellátásra használja fel. Akad azonba olyan eset, amikor egy menhelynek váratlan karbantartási nehézségei támadnak, ilyen esetben is szponzort kell keresni, hiszen a menhelyek szűkös költségvetése váratlan kiadásokra nem nyújt fedezetet.
A legfőbb bevétel forrás az 1 %-os adományozás, melynek összege az elmúlt 10 évben a negyedére csökkent.

Együttműködik az Állatvédő Világszervezettel, az Angol Királyi Állatvédő Ligával.
A Magyar Állatvédő és Természetbarát Szövetséget 1992-ben alapították a készülő Állatvédelmi Törvény létrehozása érdekében. Alapítói a tagszervezetek (megnézhető: ITT), melyek kizárólag jogi személyiségű egyesületek, vagy alapítványok lehetnek.
A MÁTSZ tagszervezeteinek nagy része állatmenhelyet üzemeltet, így az ország majdnem minden megyéjében jelen van.
